Aliens, Cowboys, and
Irishmen, Oh My!
Hi all! My name is Marie Rose Dufour
and I’m a writer with Secret Cravings Publishing. I have three
novellas published and am feverishly working on a paranormal trilogy
which keeps growing and growing by the day. Please leave a comment
and your email address for a chance to win a copy of any of my books
and a $10 Gift Card to Amazon, in case you want to buy the other two
books. (wink, wink)
My question to you today is, if you
found an author that you really liked, would you be upset if they
wrote in all different genres? Sometimes I feel like I’m a writer
who has ADHD. None of my books are written in the same genre,
although they all are erotic romance. My first book, Fated Mates,
is sci-fi. My second, Irish Rising, is a straight up
contemporary romance. The third book, Saddle Up, is a
cowboy/cougar romance. At the moment, I’m working on a paranormal
story. So you can see, I’m all over the place.
Right now, I don’t have a signature
genre. You could call me a “dabble writer” at the moment. Is this
hurting me as an author with readers? If I want a hot cowboy story,
the name Sandy Sullivan immediately comes to mind. I know if I’m in
the mood for some hot male/male action, Shannon West will not
disappoint. So to ask again, by writing in all different genres am I
alienating certain readers. Do the sci-fi readers not want to read
contemporary? Would the cowboy/cougar readers rather be tied up,
dipped in honey, and placed on an anthill than read a sci-fi romance?
Remove the anthill and that would be an awesome scene for another
cowboy story. LOL!
To borrow a line
from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, “I’m like cookie dough.”
As a writer, I’m trying on different genres to see what type will
fit or what “cookie” seems right when I’m done. Honestly, I’m
having such a good time writing that I don’t know if I’ll ever
pick just one particular genre to write in. I’ve only been
published for less than a year now. So for the moment, I’ll remain
“cookie dough” and see where the baking, or should I say the
writing will take me.
I love hearing from readers, so here
are some places you can find me.
Hey, Marie - a fav writer of mine authoring works in different genres wouldn't bother me at all. Although Stephen King is known as the master of horror, I believe some of the best work he's done is mainstream (Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile).
ReplyDeleteI'm actually more interested in story than whether a writer adheres to what they're 'supposed' to.
Love your covers. :)
Thanks Tina. I'm enjoying all genres right now!
ReplyDeleteI think you should try out different genres--not only because you may get readers in all of them, but because you will expand your creativity.
ReplyDeleteI agree Vanessa. I'm sure I'll probably pick one some day but it's not going to be soon!
ReplyDeleteI think you should write what you enjoy. As a reader, I look for a good story. An author doesn't have to write just one genre any more than a reader has to read only one genre
ReplyDeleteThanks Lisa. I think so too!!
ReplyDeleteI'm another author who is all over the place, Marie Rose. I just can't seem to pick any particular genre. If I love an author enough I'll follow them anywhere regardless of genre.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nina. I'm the same way. If I like an author, it doesn't matter what genre they write in!!!!
ReplyDeleteI prefer to call it an eclectic imagination, rather than "all over the place" It sounds more prestigious. LOL I have several things in the works too, my current series is Paranormal-Werewolves, but I have a Cowboy series in the works, as well as another shifter story, and a D/s venture. The only common link for me is that I prefer to write menage.
ReplyDeleteLOL! You make it sound so prestigious, where I call myself ADHD. Thanks for stopping by!!!
ReplyDeleteLOL! Write what you want, and then if you get "requests" for more of one type, decide if you care to go that way again. Just enjoy your craft.
ReplyDeleteThanks Fran. I remember when my first book was published. My mom said to me, "Sci-fi, it will never sell!" LOL! Thanks for stopping by!!
ReplyDeleteSome of my favorite authors DO cross-genre on me. Sometimes I follow and read everything they write (like Lisa Kleypas books or Julie Garwood), sometimes I only read one line of their book (for some reason, I cannot read Suzanne Enoch's contemporary books, though I devour her historicals--I don't know why). I write a few different genres like you; want to dip my toe in a couple places and see where the water has the perfect temp! Personally, I don't see a problem with it. I like some diversity! Good luck on your genre adventures!
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda. I feel the same way about some authors. I like Julie Garwood's historical books but only a few of her contemporary. I guess it all comes down to the story. If it catches a reader's attention, then they'll read it. Thanks for coming by.
DeleteI've written a few different genres too. I enjoy writing cougar stories, contemporary and now paranormal. I think if readers like you, they'll stick by you no matter what. I will!
ReplyDeleteAmber, you are a jack of all trades. You know if you write it, I will read it! Love you so much!!! Thanks for coming by and making me feel like I have some "fans". ;)
DeleteI also write in different genres but I think that's fine because I like to read different genres depending on my moods. I always say write whatever character is screaming the loudest to be heard.
ReplyDeleteI agree Eden. I read all different types of genres. It's kind of like my tv viewing. My mother once called me weird because I can sit down and watch Pride and Prejudice and then turn around and watch Aliens, or The Avengers! I once told her as a teenager that I had eclectic taste. So maybe that's how I am as a writer too! LOL!
DeleteAnd the winner is... Fran Lee! I used Random.org to generate the winning person.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I can see how it could potentially hurt you as an author because I know of people who only read the same genre, and really much the same story line over and over again.
ReplyDeleteBut I also know people-like me- who fall in love with the author, too. I've read genres that didn't interest me at first just because I was devoted to the author. Now, I'm not saying that you should love everything your favorite author likes, but they ultimately helped open my mind to other things that I ended up really enjoying.
So, I guess I would suggest that you do what makes you happy. If you want to write about other things then you should. As long as the story is enjoyable and you are passionate in your writing, I don't think your audience will mind.
Great post Marie!
Good post, Marie, thought provoking. I appreciate authors who write in different genres and think you should keep on writing what you love.
